Driftmane

Tundra
A hardy, thick-furred beast with a mane that flutters like mist in the icy winds. To see one is taken as a sign of good luck

The Driftmane is a resilient and quietly majestic inhabitant of the tundra, built to endure conditions that would drive most creatures away. Its thick coat protects it from the biting cold, while its distinctive mane flows constantly as though caught in a breeze - even in complete stillness.

This flowing mane gives the Driftmane its name. It appears less like fur and more like drifting mist, shifting and curling in soft, continuous motion. In blizzard conditions, this effect becomes even more pronounced, allowing the creature to blend partially into the swirling snow.

Despite the harshness of its environment, the Driftmane moves with calm confidence. It travels steadily across frozen plains and through deep drifts, seemingly unbothered by wind or cold. Its hooves leave shallow, precise prints that are often quickly erased by the elements.

Among travellers and nomadic groups, spotting a Driftmane is widely considered a sign of good fortune. Many believe that following its path - at a respectful distance - can lead to safer routes or more stable weather. Whether this is superstition or subtle environmental awareness on the creature's part is open to interpretation.

The Driftmane itself is neither particularly shy nor overtly social. It will tolerate distant observation but tends to drift away if approached too closely. There is a sense that it prefers not to be followed for long, as though its path is its own and not meant to be shared.

Though not a guardian in the traditional sense, the Driftmane carries an air of quiet guidance. In a landscape defined by uncertainty, its presence offers a small but meaningful reassurance - something steady, something enduring, moving calmly through the storm.
