Mirage Runner
Few creatures capture the wonder - and frustration - of the desert quite like the Mirage Runner.
This elegant, golden antelope seems to exist on the very edge of reality. Often spotted shimmering in the distance, it appears as part of a mirage: a flicker of movement in the heat haze, a shape that doesn't quite resolve no matter how hard you focus. Many travellers dismiss it as a trick of the light... until it moves.
The Mirage Runner is real - but it does not behave like anything bound by ordinary rules.
When observed from afar, it grazes peacefully or wanders across the dunes with graceful ease. Its coat glows faintly in the sun, reflecting light in ways that make it difficult to track. As you approach, however, it becomes increasingly elusive. Distances stretch, angles shift, and no matter how quickly you close in, it always seems just out of reach.
And then, without warning, it's gone.
Those rare few who have managed to see a Mirage Runner up close describe an almost surreal experience. The air around it feels distorted, as if reality itself is bending slightly. Sounds become muted and time seems to slow for just a moment. It's not clear whether this is an effect the creature actively produces or simply a byproduct of its existence.
Legends suggest the Mirage Runner is drawn to those who are lost or desperate, appearing as a fleeting guide - or a cruel illusion, depending on your perspective. Some claim it leads travellers towards water or safety, while others insist it lures the unwary deeper into the desert.
What's certain is this: chasing a Mirage Runner is a mistake.
It cannot be caught, cornered, or followed for long. The harder you try, the more the desert seems to twist around you. Wise travellers admire it from afar and carry on their way.
Because in the desert, not everything that appears is meant to be pursued.
