Bogshade
The Bogshade is one of the swamp's most easily overlooked inhabitants, often mistaken for nothing more than a drifting clump of moss or debris caught in still water. Only when it moves - or when one looks closely enough to notice a pair of faintly glowing eyes - does its true nature become apparent.
Its body is loose and irregular, composed of dense, waterlogged plant matter that shifts subtly as it drifts. This natural camouflage allows the Bogshade to remain almost entirely hidden, blending seamlessly into the thick, stagnant waters it calls home. It rarely moves with urgency, instead gliding slowly through the shallows as though carried by unseen currents.
Despite its somewhat eerie appearance, the Bogshade is remarkably gentle. It shows little interest in confrontation and will often retreat quietly if approached too directly. Those who remain calm and non-threatening may find it lingering nearby, observing with quiet curiosity rather than fear.
Interestingly, the Bogshade seems to respond to presence rather than movement. It can sense disturbances in the water and shifts in the air, often approaching slowly to investigate. This behaviour has led to a number of surprisingly peaceful encounters, with the creature drifting alongside travellers for short periods before eventually slipping away again.
It prefers solitude, however, and does not gather in groups. Each Bogshade appears to maintain its own quiet territory within the swamp, rarely crossing paths with others of its kind. What it feeds on is unclear, though it is believed to draw nutrients directly from the surrounding water and plant life.
In a place where danger often hides just beneath the surface, the Bogshade is a rare exception - a quiet, watchful presence that asks for nothing and offers no threat, provided it is treated with the same calm respect it extends to others.
